NORWICH, Conn. -- A pair of big innings helped the Mystic Schooners post a 10-3 win over the visiting North Shore Navigators in Thursday night’s New England Collegiate Baseball League game between the Coastal Division rivals at Senator Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium.

North Shore was unable to post a second consecutive win, falling to 10-15 on the summer. Mystic is now 13-10.

Third baseman Jake Berger (Harvard) went 2-for-3, walked for the 30th time this summer and scored a run to lead North Shore’s offense. First baseman Matt Chatelle (Merrimack) drove a pinch-hit double in the eighth inning, which marked his fifth hit over the last three games and team-leading 13th RBI of the season.

The Schooners wasted little time taking control of the scoreboard as six of the first seven batters recorded hits and three scored in the first inning. Left fielder Landon Moran’s (Stetson) one-out double brought second baseman Sam Kirkpatrick (Belmont) home with the game’s first run. Designated hitter Caleb Stelly (Louisiana) singled to right and a subsequent error made it 3-0.

A third-inning run allowed North Shore to cut into its deficit. Right fielder Jake McElroy (Holy Cross) drew a leadoff walk before Berger dropped down a bunt single to put two on with nobody out, setting up the Navs’ first run. 

After center fielder Peter Messervy (Harvard) moved both runners into scoring position with a ground ball, Griffis ripped a hard-hit single at third baseman Addison Kopack (Rhode Island) to drive home a run. 

North Shore, which left 13 runners on base in the game, was unable to extend the damage as Connor Podeszwa (Tufts) stranded the three runners he inherited from starter Everett Catlett (Georgetown) with an inning-ending strikeout.

Mystic broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning that began with first baseman Matt Brinker (Northeastern) going deep to left. With the bases loaded, Kopack hit an RBI single, Moran drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Stelly followed with a run-scoring base hit of his own.

The Navs got a run closer on first baseman Tanner Zellem’s (Tennessee) sac fly to left in the fifth. Berger hit a leadoff single, Messervy walked and Griffis flew out to move the runners ahead and set up the RBI chance.

An inning later, Moran’s two-run double to center extended the Mystic lead.

The teams traded single runs in the eighth. Navs infielder Brendan Jones (Holy Cross) ripped a leadoff single before McElroy kept the rally going with a two-out walk. Chatelle drove home the run with a line double to left.

South Hamilton native Will Jones (Northeastern) took the loss, striking out six while allowing four earned runs in 3.1 innings. Peabody’s Ryan Bradley (Bryant) fanned four Schooners in a scoreless and hitless eighth inning.

Kirkpatrick went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and Moran had four RBI to lead Mystic’s 13-hit attack. Podeszwa earned his second victory on the mound.

After being on the road since Monday, the Navs return home to host the Ocean State Waves at 7:05 p.m. Friday from Fraser Field. It will be another “Free Entry Friday” with free admission for all fans, while Texas Roadhouse of Danvers presents Country Music Night.
