Taylor, Tringale Help Navs Down Valley Friday, 6-3

LYNN, Mass. -- A four-run second inning proved to be the difference in helping the North Shore Navigators get back on the winning track with a 6-3 win over the visiting Valley Blue Sox in Friday’s New England Collegiate Baseball League action at Fraser Field.

North Shore snapped its five-game losing streak and improved to 8-23 on the season. Valley is 15-18 after its third straight loss.

Catcher Charlie Taylor (Tennessee) went 2-for-3 with a walk, run scored and three RBI to lead the Navs’ eight-hit offensive attack. Shortstop Ty Dooley (Coastal Carolina) and center fielder Justin Cassella (Elon) scored two runs apiece.

Saugus native Todd Tringale (Dayton) earned his second win of the summer, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out four across five innings.

The Navs opened the scoring with a crooked number, scoring four runs on four hits and a pair of Valley errors in the bottom of the second inning. As the game turned out, North Shore didn’t need any further offense as Valley was held off the scoreboard and logged just two hits outside of its three-run third.

In the big inning, three of the team’s base knocks came consecutively with one out off Blue Sox starter and St. John’s Prep grad Sam Belliveau (UMass). After left fielder Jake McElroy (Holy Cross) and Cassella started the rally with back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position on a throwing error from right field, Taylor ripped a two-run hit to left to lift North Shore early.

Dooley kept the line moving with a walk before Gustin sent a run-scoring single through to center. The middle infielders combined for a successful double steal during third baseman Max Viera’s (Seton Hall) next at-bat, bringing Dooley home through the back door with the fourth run.

Valley cut its deficit to one by scoring three runs in the third, including two on designated hitter Jevon Mason’s (Southeast Missouri State) single up the middle. After two walks, a fielder’s choice and a bases-loaded hit batter led to the runs, Tringale retired three consecutive batters and dialed back for his first strikeout of the game to end the threat.

The Navs added insurance to their lead with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings. In the fourth, Dooley’s one-out single started up the offense and preceded a walk to second baseman Jake Gustin (Bryant) and Viera’s sacrifice fly to center.

Cassella drew a free pass to help North Shore get back on the board in the sixth. He proceeded to steal second base, reach third on an error and score on another Taylor RBI hit.

Valley’s bats were silenced over the final six innings against Tringale and a trio of Navs relievers. After Tringale exited after five innings, Nate Espelin (Dayton) struck out three over two scoreless and hitless innings before Timmy Kenney (Lehigh) and Max Tarlin (Endicott) teamed up to close the game. Tarlin pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his first save of the summer.

The Navs hit the road for a 6:35 p.m. Saturday clash with the reigning NECBL champion Danbury Westerners in Connecticut before returning to Fraser Field to host the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks in a Sunday doubleheader.
