LYNN, Mass. -- Just one week remains in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League's regular season, and the North Shore Navigators will be looking to finish up on a high note.
The Navs sit 1.5 games behind third-place Brockton entering Wednesday's action, but they have two games against the Rox and two against the second-place Nashua Silver Knights over the final seven days of the summer.
North Shore has three home dates on its remaining calendar as it looks to get hot and make up ground in the standings in order to become one of the top two teams qualifying for the championship series. The week also features a televised appearance on NESN!
RECORD-SETTING SUNDAY
▪ The Navs needed just the last four innings to score 15 of their season-high 16 runs and make some franchise history in Sunday’s 16-4 win over the New Britain Bees.
▪ Outfielder Ben Malgeri (Northeastern) recorded a franchise-record seven RBI on the strength of his first two home runs this summer. His second long ball was a ninth-inning grand slam and also marked his third run scored in the game.
▪ Sal Frelick (Boston College) went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a franchise-record five runs scored while playing shortstop and hitting atop North Shore’s batting order.
▪ Third baseman Cody Morissette (Boston College) and right fielder Jack Whorf (UMass) also had multi-hit games for the Navs.
SHUT IT DOWN
▪ A night before blowing past New Britain, the Navs put it all together for a 7-1 win over the Westfield Starfires at Fraser Field.
▪ Lefty Tom Chmielewski (Princeton) earned his first win in his third start of the summer, allowing just two hits while striking out seven over the first six innings.
▪ Chmielewski became North Shore’s second pitcher to work a start of that length in 2020, retiring 15 consecutive batters between his first and last frames.
▪ Cedric Gillette (Merrimack) brushed off solo homers in each of the first two frames of the aforementioned game against the Bees and finished 5.1 innings with just two runs and four hits allowed.
▪ Despite Tuesday’s Home Run Derby loss in Brockton, Todd Tringale (Northern Essex CC) was named the FCBL Pitcher of the Night. He held the Rox to a single hit over the first five innings.
AT THE PLATE
▪ The Navs rank second in the FCBL with a .267 batting average, .377 on-base percentage and 170 runs scored. Their 52 stolen bases in 57 attempts rank atop the circuit.
▪ Infielder Logan Bravo (Harvard) still leads the league with 38 hits in 31 games, while his .342 average is fourth. Bravo had reached base in 21 consecutive games before going 0-for-1 on Tuesday.
▪ Morissette is tied for second in the FCBL with 27 RBI and boasts the seventh-leading average at .325.
▪ Malgeri has scored eight more runs than any other player in the league (35) and stole two bases in each of his last two games to move his league-leading total to 17 for the summer.
▪ Frelick stood among league qualifiers before he missed two weeks due to injury, but his .449 average still leads the team. The Lexington native has reached base in all 18 of his games, and his 17-game hit streak is the longest in the Navs’ FCBL history.
▪ On Saturday, first baseman Cam Climo (UMass Lowell) hit his team-leading third homer and drove in two runs to help ensure Chmielewski’s win. Second baseman Jonathan Luders (Seton Hall) went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI as one of five players to record a multi-hit game.
WHO’S HOT?
▪ Frelick is 12-for-22 with four doubles, a triple, five RBI, eight runs scored and three stolen bases over his last five games.
▪ Infielder Jake McElroy (Holy Cross) has played in all seven games of the last week’s time, going 7-for-21 with a double, five runs scored and three swipes.
▪ Luders was 4-for-12 with a double, three RBI and a run scored over his last five games.
▪ Whorf has hit safely in each of his last three games, recording multiple hits on Sunday at New Britain and Monday at Nashua. He has scored a run and driven in three more over his last six outings.
WELCOME TO THE CLUB
▪ Burlington native Shane O'Halloran (Stonehill) made his North Shore debut on Monday and recorded a hit in two at-bats.
▪ Outfielder Tommy Seidl (Harvard) joined the Navs the following night after spending last summer with the NECBL's New Bedford Bay Sox.
▪ Seidl hit .318 with two doubles, a homer, three RBI and two runs scored over six games during his shortened junior year for the Crimson.
THE WEEK AHEAD
▪ The final week of the Navs’ regular season begins with two more games against Brockton. The two teams meet at Campanelli Stadium for the second straight day on Wednesday and then return to Fraser Field the following night.
▪ Following the three-game stretch against Brockton, the Navs will visit the defending champion Worcester Bravehearts in their first and only game at Leominster’s Doyle Field this season.
▪ Over the weekend, North Shore plays its NESN-televised game against the Nashua Silver Knights on Saturday and welcomes the Westfield Starfires to Lynn for a Sunday doubleheader.
▪ The Navs have Monday off before playing their final two games of 2020.
