Four Navs Selected in 2019 MLB DraftLYNN, Mass. -- Two members of the current North Shore Navigators roster and two of the team’s alumni were selected during the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, which concluded Wednesday with the 11th through 40th rounds. Dan Metzdorf (2015) led the Navs quartet as a Tuesday selection, getting a call from the Chicago White Sox in the fifth round. Two members of this summer’s roster were 11th-round selections as center fielder Marcus Lee Sang and pitcher Sebastian Keane went to the Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox, respectively. To round out the day, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim called the name of Spencer Brown (2018) in the 39th round. “The Navigators are proud of our four current and former players who were selected during the MLB Draft this week,” Assistant General Manager Joe Gill said. “Watching Dan’s journey from high school senior to Boston College ace to such a high draft pick has been special, while Marcus and Sebastian are examples of the great talent we have on this summer’s roster. Spencer had an incredible season at Northern Essex Community College after playing for us last summer. We’re excited for all of them to get this opportunity to fulfill their dreams.” The No. 140 overall selection, Metzdorf becomes the first former Navigator drafted in a single-digit round since the St. Louis Cardinals used their ninth-round pick to select second baseman Opie Brodbeck (Flagler) in 2015. The Boston College lefty is also the first North Shore alum to go in the top five rounds since 2013 when Notre Dame teammates Eric Jagielo and Dan Slania were taken in the first and fifth rounds, respectively. The Burlington, Mass., native was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference and All-New England First Team starting pitcher after posting an 8-2 record and 2.30 ERA in 12 outings as a senior at BC. Metzdorf, a 38th-round pick of the New York Yankees last year, went 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 35 innings over his 17 appearances in the Futures League. Lee Sang had an incredible senior season at Northern High School in Owings, Md., hitting .523 with a .602 on-base percentage, six home runs, 31 runs scored, and 18 RBI. The St. John’s commit also posted a 0.55 ERA with 76 strikeouts in 51 innings on the mound, but he was announced as a center fielder with the 330th overall pick. His high school team won its first regional championship since 2009 this spring. Keane was taken 17 picks later at No. 347. The Northeastern commit was cited as the top high school pitcher in this year’s New England draft class and earned All-Northeast Region First Team honors from Perfect Game. According to the Eagle-Tribune, Keane entered North Andover’s Super 8 run with a 9-1 record and 0.27 ERA. The Massachusetts Gatorade Player of the Year and reigning Merrimack Valley Conference MVP allowed just two earned runs over 51.2 innings and struck out 98. After appearing in 10 games for the Navs last summer, Brown was named NJCAA Region XXI Player of the Year during his first spring at Northern Essex Community College. The Beverly, Mass., native and former Northeastern Conference MVP led all Division 3 junior college players with 17 home runs while hitting .486 with 52 RBI for the Knights. Thirty-four of his 71 hits went for extra bases as he also recorded 10 doubles and seven triples. Brown was the 1,171st overall pick by the organization that also took former FCBL All-Star infielder Richard Fecteau (2015) out of Salem State three years ago. |
