Nashua Scores Late to Drop Navs, 9-6By Joshua Kummins LYNN, Mass. -- Before a crowd of 2,145 fans largely consisting of students from Lynn Public Schools, the Nashua Silver Knights scored eight of their nine runs over the sixth and seventh innings en route to a 9-6 win over the North Shore Navigators in Wednesday’s Futures Collegiate Baseball League game at Fraser Field. North Shore fell to 4-2 on the young season after Pittsfield’s loss to Worcester, while Nashua earned its first win of the season over the Navigators and improved to 2-4. Despite the loss, three Navigators recorded more than one of the team’s 10 hits. Second baseman Dominic Freeberger (UNC Asheville) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while third baseman Tyler MacGregor (Columbia) posted his third multi-hit game of the season, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Nashua scored the game’s first run on left fielder Kyle Sandstrom’s (Charleston Southern) two-out home run to right field in the first inning, but the hosts immediately responded as right fielder Sean Lawlor (Flagler), Freeberger, and MacGregor hit three consecutive two-out doubles to produce two runs and give the Navs a 2-1 lead. For Lawlor, it was his first of two doubles in the contest. The teams traded zeroes before North Shore added to its lead in the third after Lawlor doubled with one out and scored on MacGregor’s single up the middle. The Silver Knights walked five times but managed just one hit against North Shore starter Arlo Marynczak (Siena) through the first four innings. They stranded another during Jake Gigliotti’s (Northeastern) first frame of work, but a hit batter and two walks preceded designated hitter Dylan Jones (Franklin Pierce) roping a three-run triple to deep right to flip the score Nashua’s way in the sixth. Nashua finished breaking the game open in the seventh, scoring five runs on two hits while sending all nine batters to the plate. Gigliotti induced a ground ball to begin the frame, but the next seven Silver Knights reached base consecutively. Two runs scored with the bases loaded and another came on a wild pitch, while Jones hit a two-run single to punctuate the frame. Lefty George Welch (Saint Joseph’s of Maine) pitched consecutive 1-2-3 innings for Nashua before he was tagged for a run in the sixth. After Freeberger drew a leadoff walk and MacGregor singled, designated hitter Ben Malgeri (Holy Cross) knocked a base hit for his third RBI of the summer. Eight North Shore players came to bat in the seventh. Center fielder Nolan Watson (Dayton) and second baseman Andrew Olszak (Southern Maine) opened the inning with back-to-back doubles to plate a run. After shortstop Logan Bravo (Harvard) and Freeberger followed with walks, MacGregor sent a grounder to second base to score Olszak with the final Navs run. Gigliotti suffered his first loss following a 4.2-inning relief effort last Friday at Worcester. Navs reliever Parker Browne (Suffolk) stranded a Nashua baserunner in the seventh before pitching back-to-back 1-2-3 innings to round out the game. For Nashua, Welch recorded six of his eight outs via the strikeout after starter Daniel O’Connor (Maryland) threw the first three frames. However, Brady McGarry (St. Leo) earned the win as he was the last Silver Knight pitcher into the game before his team took the lead. Joe Grassett (Hartford) pitched 2.2 innings of one-hit ball for his first save.
Jones had three of Nashua’s five hits and five of eight RBI. Shortstop Ben Cowles (Maryland) and Peabody native center fielder Ben Irvine (Maryland) scored two runs apiece. |
