With Playoffs Nearing, Awesome Pitching Highlights Navs' Week of College Ball![]() LYNN, Mass. — Here are the latest college baseball highlights for incoming North Shore Navigators players: John Whitney (Samford) threw 3.1 innings of scoreless relief in an impressive outing against No. 10 Auburn last Tuesday, striking out four while allowing only two hits and two walks. Whitney was racking up strikeouts in a ranked in-state matchup for the second straight week after fanning seven in 2.1 innings of one-hit ball against Alabama a week earlier. In his other outing this past week, Whitney struck out two of the three batters he faced in a Sunday win over Miami (Ohio) and now has 18 strikeouts in 10.1 innings on the season. It was a strong Saturday for Liam Kinneen (Princeton) against Cornell, as the freshman right-hander from Lexington went six strong innings and only allowed two earned runs while striking out seven in a 9-5 victory over the Big Red. The win was Kinneen’s third of the season and helped the Tigers win the weekend series in Ivy League play. Several locals pitched in this past week, including Peabody’s Joe Castrichini (Longwood) who recorded his longest start of the spring on Sunday with four strikeouts in five innings against USC Upstate. Former Swampscott pitcher Pierce Friedman (Maine) made two scoreless relief appearances last week, totaling four strikeouts in a combined 2.2 innings. Friedman worked a hitless inning in the Black Bears’ 5-4, 10-inning win last Wednesday at Boston College before his third three-strikeout outing of the season on Sunday against America East foe Bryant. Nahant native Nick Reiser (Bridgewater State) pitched the final two innings of a 6-3 win over MASCAC rival Fitchburg State last Monday before working 1.1 scoreless innings to help the Bears claim a crucial series against Westfield State to end the regular season. He had three strikeouts in 3.1 combined innings of work. Trey Yesu struck out six in 6.2 innings to start a 7-4 win on Friday in Westfield. Reiser, Yesu and the Bears enter the conference’s postseason as the No. 1 seed and defending champion. Also in the bullpen, Cole Yennaco (Merrimack) worked two shutout innings in a 3-1 Sunday win over MAAC rival Niagara to post his fourth save of the season. It was the New Hampshire native’s second consecutive scoreless, multi-inning outing for the Warriors, and he has now recorded 23 strikeouts in 27.2 innings as a sophomore. Ben Rehkow (Winthrop) was back at it again this week as he faced Wofford, striking out two in 1.1 innings to record his third save of the season. The Wednesday outing marked his third straight without allowing an earned run. Rehkow now has a sub-two ERA at 1.93 on the season and has played a big role in Winthrop having a 27-21 record. Moving to the positional side, Brooks Wright (Louisiana) had an impact in all three of the Ragin’ Cajuns’ victories against Georgia State over the weekend, reaching base and scoring at least one run in each game. After scoring twice to help his team to Friday’s 10-5, series-opening win, Wright walked twice, stole a base, and scored a run in an 8-3 Saturday victory and continued his momentum with two hits, including a double, as the Cajuns won 10-4 on Sunday to complete a Sun Belt series sweep in Atlanta. Jesse Jaconski (Penn State) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored on Sunday, helping the Nittany Lions salvage an 8-4 win over Maryland in their final Big Ten home series. The returning North Shore outfielder also had hits in the first two games against the Terrapins, moving his average to .305 with 47 RBI on the season. Todd Clay (UAB) hit safely in all four games for the Blazers last week, including a two-hit performance in their American Conference series opener at Memphis on Friday. Clay now has at least one hit in 13 of his last 15 games, including five multi-hit performances. Two Navigators helped Stonehill claim its fifth straight Northeast Conference series following back-to-back wins at Coppin State. Adding in a midweek victory over Merrimack last Tuesday in which he belted his fourth home run, Aidan Sengenberger began the week with three multi-hit games in a row as his average reached .355. He highlighted the stretch with a triple in a 3-for-3 Saturday showing as the Skyhawks won 11-4. Sam Parks recorded three of his four RBI in the same game and finished the weekend with four RBI while scoring twice in a 13-2 Sunday win. Jack Gold (Pomona-Pitzer) helped the Sagehens finish the SCIAC regular season with a three-game weekend sweep of Occidental. The versatile sophomore went 5-for-10 with two doubles, five RBI, three runs scored and one stolen base, highlighted by two-hit games in the bookending games of the series. In 34 regular-season games, Gold hit .393 with a 1.436 OPS, 27 extra-base hits and 51 RBI. His .889 slugging percentage ranks fifth in NCAA Division 3. The Navigators will return to historic Fraser Field and the NECBL for their 18th summer collegiate season in 2025, with first pitch set for Tuesday, June 3 against the Northern Division rival Upper Valley Nighthawks.
