Stellar Relief Pitching, Power Hitting Continues for Navs in College

LYNN, Mass. — Here are the latest college baseball highlights for incoming North Shore Navigators players:

Returning Navigator Zach Morris (Rhode Island) posted a dominant weekend of relief pitching to help his Rams sweep a three-game series from Eastern Kentucky. The Gloucester native worked in bookending games of the series, combining for four, two-hit innings with seven strikeouts and has now worked five of his six games this season without allowing an earned run. Morris recorded a three-inning save in Sunday’s series finale, allowing only two hits while fanning six.

Sticking with the bullpen theme, Cole Yennaco (Merrimack) closed out both Warrior wins in their first-ever MAAC series at Marist. The right-hander induced a double play all for the final two outs of a 10-5 Saturday win before dealing 1.2 hitless innings to finish a 13-7 Sunday win. He entered the latter contest when it was 8-6 before his offense scored five runs in the top of the ninth. After facing Yennaco’s Warriors last week, fellow North Shore newcomer Sean Zaslaw (Bryant) worked his third straight scoreless appearance and earned a Sunday win at Dayton, striking out three across 1.2 innings of one-hit ball.

Third baseman Todd Clay (UAB) continued his scorching start with a 3-for-4 performance in the Blazers’ huge non-conference upset of No. 22 Auburn and a 10-for-18 weekend at the First Pitch Invitational in Greenville, S.C. Clay had three RBI against Auburn, including a massive two-run single that gave UAB the lead at the time. He punctuated the weekend with a 5-for-5 Sunday in the Blazers’ 12-7 victory over Michigan State. For the season, Clay is the second-leading hitter in the American Athletic Conference with a .479 average along with a .575 on-base percentage and 16 RBI.

The top slugger in all of NCAA Division 3 with a 1.250 mark through 14 games, Jack Gold (Pomona-Pitzer) continued his incredible start to the season with a 9-for-11 performance, three home runs, nine RBI and six runs scored against MIT and Wisconsin-La Crosse. Gold went deep twice and drove in five to help the Sagehens beat MIT 18-9 as part of a Saturday doubleheader sweep. He then hit for the cycle in a 13-5 Sunday win.

Opening Big Ten Conference play, Jesse Jaconski (Penn State) hit and scored a run in all three games as the Nittany Lions topped Indiana in a three-game series. The left fielder also finished the weekend with a double and two RBI, all in a 15-9 win in the first half of a Friday doubleheader. He is one of seven double-digit run producers for the 11-2 Nittany Lions.

Marc Willi (Massachusetts) was back at it again as the Minutemen took a trip down to Annapolis, Md., to face Navy. In the second game of a Saturday doubleheader, the first baseman launched his first home run of the season. Willi’s batting average now sits at .308 for the season and he continues to see the ball well, with five walks in 18 plate appearances.

It was another strong week for the Winthrop Eagles, who picked up a huge midweek victory against Oklahoma State as they won 9-3 on Wednesday. Once again, Ethan Wilson played a huge role, going 3-for-5 with two doubles against the Cowboys, and also picking up three more doubles in a 10-4 Saturday win over Cornell. Back on the mound, Ben Rehkow shut out Michigan State for two innings on Saturday. Rehkow’s start has extended to 7.1 innings of one-run ball across six outings.

PJ Craig (Rider) had the Broncs back in the win column this weekend, as the right-hander kept Saint Peter’s at bay in his third start of the spring. Craig struck out four in six strong innings of two-run baseball. The game turned into a slugfest after Craig exited, but Rider held on for a 25-17 win and improved to 8-3 on the season.

Two North Shore pitchers made their season debut this past week. St. John’s Prep grad Sam Belliveau (Massachusetts) earned a Saturday start at Navy and pitched an inning, returning from an injury that cut his redshirt sophomore season in 2024 short. Oisin Lee (Notre Dame) took the mound for his first collegiate appearance in the final inning of the Fighting Irish’s ACC series opener at Wake Forest, recording his first career strikeout in a scoreless inning.

The Navigators will return to historic Fraser Field and the NECBL for their 18th summer collegiate season in 2025, with first pitch set for Tuesday, June 3 against the Northern Division rival Upper Valley Nighthawks.
