Navs Fall at Mystic, Win Streak Snapped

GROTON, Conn. 一 The North Shore Navigators saw their four-game win streak come to an end on Friday night, falling to the Coastal Division rival Mystic Schooners 5-2 in New England Collegiate Baseball League action at Fitch High School.

North Shore slipped to 17-23 on the summer, but still remains 1.5 games behind the final wild card position in the playoff picture. Mystic is 22-17 after winning for the sixth time in seven head-to-head series meetings.

On the offensive side, first baseman Andrew Bianco (Seton Hall) and second baseman Danny MacDougall (Endicott) registered North Shore’s only two hits while designated hitter Isaac Kim (UC Santa Barbara) had the lone RBI.

Nahant native Nick Reiser (Bridgewater State) dealt his longest outing of the summer for the Navigators, striking out three across five innings of three-run ball. However, the North Shore offense was unable to score until the sixth inning as the quest for its first five-game win streak since 2020 was snapped.

Reiser worked around first baseman Maddix Dalena’s (UConn) two-out double and left fielder Christian Scanlon’s (Merrimack) leadoff single over the first two innings, respectively, but Dalena broke the scoreless deadlock when he ripped a two-out, two-run home run to right field for a 2-0 Mystic lead in the third.

The Schooners’ fourth began with walks to two of the first three batters. After designated hitter Cian Sahler (Fordham) stole third, right fielder Jayden Hylton (Stetson) knocked an RBI single up the middle to make it a 3-0 game.

The visitors were able to dent the scoreboard before the game trickled into the late innings, getting Kim’s sacrifice fly to left followed by a scoreless frame from reliever Justin Posnik (Bentley) in the sixth. Posnik finished a strong outing out of the Navs bullpen, allowing just one hit across two scoreless frames.

Catcher Ryan MacDougall (Dayton) came around to score the first North Shore run after drawing a leadoff walk and advancing as center fielder Kyle Jones (Stetson) was hit by a pitch and on shortstop Reece Moroney (Rhode Island) reached on a fielder’s choice. Kim then ripped Mystic southpaw Dan Driscoll’s (Eastern Connecticut State) first pitch to him into left for a sac fly.

The Navs scored without the benefit of a hit for the second time in three innings in the eighth. Right fielder Ryan Gerety (Northeastern) walked to begin the frame and took second on Jones’ infield squibber before creating the run on the basepaths, stealing third and scoring on an errant throw by the catcher.

Two unearned runs against Swampscott native Pierce Friedman (Maine) in the eighth allowed Mystic to ensure its lead. A fielding error immediately put third baseman Tyler Minick (UConn) on second base, and catcher Matt Brinker’s (Northeastern) single up the middle gave Mystic a two-run lead. The offense restarted with two outs as Sahler’s base hit also plated a run.

Mystic allowed for no chance of a North Shore rally in the ninth. Max Haug (George Washington) struck out the side to post the save, completing his three innings without allowing a hit. The Navs went without a hit over the final four frames.

The Navs conclude their regular-season home schedule with a two-game homestand at Fraser Field, beginning Sunday with a 5:05 p.m. first pitch against the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks.
