Until the North Shore Navigators assemble at Fraser Field to begin the 2024 New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) season in early June, the team will be highlighting its incoming players’ top performances each week on nsnavs.com and social media.

Below is the 12th installment of the Navs' College Baseball Report, which will appear weekly on Mondays.

LYNN, Mass. — A week dominated by lots of hits and deep pitching outings helped to set up incoming members of the North Shore Navigators, with many stepping up in postseason play. 

It was another eye-popping weekend for returning Nav Matt Chatelle (Merrimack), who went 5-for-15 against Le Moyne with a grand slam and a total of seven RBI. The Stoneham native catcher added an additional homer to bring his season total to 10 and hit his fifth double of the season while scoring two of his five total runs on Friday. Chatelle brought his average back above .300 to .302 while his season RBI total climbed to 42.  

Fellow returnee Brett Dunham (Northeastern) tossed three shutout innings from the bullpen against UConn and College of Charleston. Dunham started his week without allowing a baserunner in his inning of work against the Huskies last Tuesday before tacking on two innings with just one walk given up against Charleston on Friday. Dunham’s Friday performance marked his fourth consecutive without allowing a run.

Alex Luccini (UMass Lowell) had a .500 weekend for the River Hawks, going 6-for-12 against America East foe NJIT. Luccini collected two hits in each of the team’s three games, driving in three runners and coming around for four runs of his own. The outfielder leads the River Hawks in home runs with nine as well as stolen bases with 16, while currently sitting second on the team in average at .298.  

Returning infielder Brendan Jones (Holy Cross) went 2-for-8 with a double and a run scored over the Crusaders’ first two Patriot League postseason games against Navy. Jones capped his performance with a 1-for-3 day on Saturday, doubling for the seventh time this season and stealing his fourth bag of the year.

First baseman Kyle Wolff (Boston College) finished out his weekend strong against Maryland, collecting two hits with an RBI and a walk against the Terrapins on Saturday and Sunday. Wolff walked a total of twice over the span of the series, bringing his season total to 17. Wolff holds the top average for the Eagles, hitting .320 as the only member of the team hitting above .300. Wolff’s 13 doubles also lead the BC squad. 

Helping his team out en route to the Commonwealth Coast Conference championship was Danny MacDougall (Endicott), who walked four times and stole an additional four bases as the Gulls swept their way to a third straight crown. MacDougall crossed the plate three times, including once in Saturday’s clinching game against Western New England, walking three times during the Saturday game. MacDougall also went 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored and three stolen bases on Friday against Roger Williams as well. For the season, his 42 stolen bases stand two shy of the program’s single-season record, while his 38 walks are also second in Gulls history.

Another key playoff contributor was Owen Tross (Middlebury), who pitched a complete game on Friday against Tufts en route to a NESCAC championship. Tross earned three punchouts against the Jumbos in a 137-pitch outing, as he led the Panthers to a 12-4 win. It was Tross’ fourth win in his last six starts, improving his record to 6-3 while dropping his ERA to 5.13 on the year. 

Kyle Jones (Stetson) helped secure a series win and an Atlantic Sun Conference tournament bid for the Hatters, going 5-for-16 against Queens (N.C.). Jones began his weekend with two hits on Friday, drawing a walk and driving in a run while picking up his league-leading 22nd stolen base. He would go on to collect three hits and another RBI on Saturday before collecting his 31st walk of the season on Sunday. With his weekend performance, Jones brought his average up to a team-best .353 while also holding the top on-base percentage for the team at .472.

Fellow Hatter Zane Coppersmith kept his streak of strong bullpen outings going, tossing 1.1 innings of two-hit ball with two strikeouts on Saturday. Coppersmith has fanned 30 and pitched to a bullpen-leading 1.42 ERA this season, with opponents hitting just .136 against him. 

Truman Pauley (Harvard) provided a strong outing to cap off his freshman year, starting Saturday’s game against Yale while racking up six strikeouts. Pauley lasted 5.2 innings for the Crimson, matching his April 27th appearance for the longest of his collegiate career. Pauley allowed just three hits by Bulldog batters as he earned his first collegiate win. 

Back to the bats, James Agabedis (Tulane) had a strong start against No. 6 East Carolina on Friday, going 2-for-3 with a two-run homer which gave the Green Wave a lead they would hold on to in a 6-5 win. His home run marked the first of his season and helped spark Tulane to a sweep of the Pirates in American Athletic Conference play. 

Mason Dobie (Dayton) went 2-for-7 across the Flyers’ first two games of the Atlantic 10 weekend series against Saint Louis, collecting three RBI and two walks across Friday and Saturday. Dobie’s two RBI game on Saturday was his 10th multi-RBI game of the season, as his 40 RBI are now good for third on the team. 

The Navigators will return to historic Fraser Field and the NECBL for their 17th summer season in 2024, with first pitch set for Tuesday, June 4.
