LYNN, Mass. 一 The visiting Danbury Westerners came from behind to score two runs in the fifth inning and held on for a win, slipping past the North Shore Navigators 4-3 in Monday night’s New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Fraser Field.
North Shore fell to 1-5 on the season following its second straight loss, while Danbury improved to 3-2.
Center fielder Brooks Wright (Louisiana) and catcher Aukai Kea (Vanderbilt) each went 2-for-3 to lead the North Shore offense. Wright knocked home all three Navigator runs across his first two at-bats.
North Shore marked the home scoreboard for the first time in the second inning as Wright lined a two-out RBI single into left to score designated hitter Sean Scanlon (Holy Cross), who battled to a one-out walk and advanced into scoring position when second baseman Jack Gold (Pomona-Pitzer) drew his own free pass.
The visitors responded immediately in a two-run third, with right fielder Garrett Larsen’s (Yale) single surrounding two walks setting the table against North Shore starter Ben Rehkow (Winthrop). Designated hitter Jack Lutte (Denison) knotted the game on a line RBI single to left before Larsen slid in safely on first baseman Matt McIntire’s (New Haven) sacrifice fly to right.
Wright ripped an opposite-field, two-run single with two outs in the fourth to continue his stellar night. After Danbury reliever Teo Spadaccini (Yale) struck out the first two batters he faced, Kea knocked a single up the middle, took second on an error and third on a passed ball. Gold then walked and stole second before Wright’s knock.
Consecutive walks to Larsen and second baseman Michael Stellrecht (Binghamton) to begin the fifth helped Danbury answer back and take a 4-3 lead. After reaching base, Larsen swiped second and crossed the plate on a pair of wild pitches before McIntire’s second straight sac fly brought in another run.
Danbury allowed just one hit after the fourth inning while North Shore gave up three in the entire game, including just one after Rehkow completed a three-inning start. Stefano Yozzo (Middlebury), Colin Dowdle (Holy Crosss) and Ryan Griffin (Northeastern) finished the game with scoreless ball while recording five, six and three outs, respectively.
The Navs had a one-out baserunner in the ninth as Kea lined a one-out single to center, but Joshua Surigao (Hawaii) struck out the side to save the victory for Spadaccini.
The Navs have Tuesday off and will return to action in a Wednesday morning matinee against the Sanford Mainers at Fraser Field. First pitch is set for 11:05 a.m.
