Waves Pitch Friday Shutout of Navs at Fraser

LYNN, Mass. 一 The Ocean State Waves posted a pair of three-run innings on the way to a 6-0 win over the North Shore Navigators in Friday night’s New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Fraser Field.

North Shore slipped to 0-3, while Ocean State won its second straight to move to 2-1.

The North Shore offense was limited to three hits on the night, but four of the team’s five relievers pitched scoreless ball in their outings. First in the line was St. John’s Prep grad Sam Belliveau (UMass), who worked two shutout innings in relief of Oisin Lee (Notre Dame).

Stefano Yozzo (Middlebury) faced the minimum in his inning of work, while Gus Magill (Cornell) and Colin Dowdle (Holy Cross) finished the game with back-to-back scoreless frames.

Lee struck out two while facing just six batters across the first two innings over the first two innings, thanks to catcher Aukai Kea (Vanderbilt) catching a runner stealing. However, a three-run third lifted the visitors to a lead that they never relinquished.

On the offensive side, first baseman Brody Dalton (St. Johns River State) hit for the second straight game after a four-RBI performance with two extra-base hits on Thursday at Keene. Second baseman Jack Gold (Pomona-Pitzer) and pinch hitter Michael Perazza (West Virginia) also found the hit column.

After two of the first three batters in the third walked, shortstop Greg Pettay (South Alabama) knocked home the opening run on a single to left. Two batters later, catcher Brandyn Durand (Bryant) extended the Ocean State lead on a ringing two-run double deep into the left-field corner.

The Waves doubled their advantage with three runs on four straight hits to begin the seventh. After singles by center fielder Gavin Greger (Bryant) and first baseman Jack LaRose (UConn) began the frame, designated hitter Zach Plasschaert (Fresno State) ripped a two-run single and second baseman Sam Siedel (Bowling Green) added a sacrifice fly to center two batters later.

Connor Grotoyohann (Rutgers) pitched two innings of shutout and hitless relief to earn the win. Pettay, Greger and LaRose all had multiple hits.

The Navs kick off a two-game weekend road trip on Saturday night against the Valley Blue Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at MacKenzie Stadium in Holyoke.
