Navigators Slay Silver Knights
The early story of the afternoon was Adrian Benitez (Barry University) who started the game off in style retiring 12 of the first 15 batters he faced only surrendering four hits and striking out seven through 5 innings.
The Navigators offense got off to a hot start of their own. Brad Elwood (UNC Charlotte) started the bottom of the first inning off with a single and a stolen base, followed by a ground ball to short off the bat of Tim Hendricks (Benedictine) that was bobbled by shortstop Griff Tewksbury (Bates). Ryan Muno (San Diego State) then put the first run on the board with an RBI double.
Elwood put the Navigators on the board again in the bottom of the second when Rob Krentzman (Bucknell) started the inning off with a single followed by a perfectly executed hit and run by Alex Markakis (St. Joe’s, ME) that put runners at first and third. Elwood then hit a Sac fly to score Krentzman making the score 2-0 Navigators.
The Silver Knights started a small rally in the bottom of the third when Chris Shaw (Lexington H.S.) reached base on an error followed by a single from Jon Minnucci (SNHU), but Benitez retired the next 2 batters to get out of the jam.
In the top of the 6th the Silver Knights scored their first run of the night afterJames Katsiroubous (Umass Lowell) walked before being driven in by a Shaw double to make the score 4-1 Naviagators. Benitez was then relieved by Keenan Kish (Florida), who retired the next 3 batters to get out of the jam.
Crayton Bare (Baylor) relieved Kish in the top of the 8th who walked the first three batters he faced before giving up a two run double to Chris Shaw to make the score 4-3 Navigators. Miles Landry (Baylor) then entered the game and retired the next 2 batters before an error by the first baseman tied the game up for the Silver Knights 4-4.
Navigators took the lead again in the bottom of the 8th inning when Krentzman started a 2 out rally with a single, followed by a Markakis single to put men on first and second. Brett Cahill (Salem State) then ripped a single to take a 5-4 lead.
Josh Michalec (Baylor) came in for the save in the bottom of the 9th but not before facing some adversity. Michalec found himself with bases loaded and one out before getting Shaw to pop up to the catcher who then dropped the ball. John Putress (Northeastern) was at 3rd base and tried to advance when the ball dropped not realizing that an infield fly was in effect and ultimately getting doubled off to end the game 5-4 Navigators.
The Navigators next game is Tuesday at 7 p.m. against the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks.
